Evan Bayh Caught in More Lies to Hoosiers
In an attempt to defend breaking Senate ethics rules, Bayh admits lying to Hoosiers.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN- When Evan Bayh retired from the U.S. Senate, he told everyone in earshot that his priority over his last year would be to continue to serve Hoosiers. He stuck by that lie until a report fromthe Associated Press forced him to change his statement.

From the AP:

Evan Bayh spent substantial time during his last year in the Senate searching for a private sector job even as he voted on issues of interest to his future corporate bosses, according to the former Indiana lawmaker’s 2010 schedule, obtained exclusively by the Associated Press.

In an attempt to defend a possible violation of Senate Ethics Rules which would’ve required Bayh to disclose these meetings, Bayh first blamed staff error for lying to Hoosier media by telling the Indianapolis Star:

“(Bayh’s) staff person made a mistake, and I think that’s regrettable.” He said his staff hadn’t asked him about the meetings.

Bayh then went on to say that a job search is normal:

“I think it’s natural when I announced I was retiring from the Senate, I’d start thinking about what I’d be doing next,” Bayh said.

However, that’s in direct contradiction to statements he made at the time.

On the CBS Early show on February 16, 2010, one day before calling a corporate headhunter (as reported in the AP story), Bayh said: “I would tell you, but I don’t know. I’m going to - what we call in Indiana basketball, I’m going to play until the final second ticks off the clock and then think about what’s next.” (CBS’ “The Early Show” 2/16/10)

On November 19, 2010, after meeting with Corporate Executives at Apollo Global Management, Bayh told Sean Hannity that he didn’t know what he was going to do after the Senate but that “I’m going to run through the tape here in the Senate. (Hannity, 11/19/10)

Even if you believe that Evan Bayh’s staff didn’t consult him to answer a question about meetings on his schedule that could’ve possibly violated Senate Ethics Rules (in a moment of extreme campaign incompetence), Evan Bayh still saw the Star story and could’ve corrected it. Regardless of the truth behind why the Bayh campaign lied to Indiana media, there is no doubt that Evan Bayh went on national TV after meeting with corporate officials and pretended that he had no intention of searching for a job until after he left the Senate, which we now know was also a lie.
