With a little over a week until the primary election, Shelby County Republicans got together Wednesday for the annual Shelby County Lincoln Day Dinner.

Local Republicans had a chance to mingle with the candidates vying for positions such as prosecutor, Superior Court I judge and County Council, which are largely uncontested by Democrats.

"I thought it was a great. It had a great turnout," said Shelby County Republican Party Chair J.R. Showers. "All the candidates were there, at the booths and had the tables set up."

The pre-election, pep-session featured a $1,000 scholarship award as well as appearances from many local politicians at the local, state and national level, including keynote speaker Congressman Luke Messer, who represents Shelby County in the 6th Congressional District in Washington, D.C.

"We all have to say something when we don't like what we see," Messer told the crowd.

Messer praised the "hardworking" Republicans at the dinner and reflected on how he became involved in running for office in the early 2000s.
