Mike Pence gets the job done on preschool

It took 50 governors, but Mike Pence got it done. And anyone who cares at all about the challenges facing Indiana’s most at-risk kids needs to do one thing: put aside politics and give the governor credit for pushing through the first direct investment in preschool in state history.

Yes, after years of frustration for advocates, Pence is the governor who got it done.

He put his political capital on the line, he brushed off concerns from some of his fellow conservatives and he kept fighting when the legislature almost killed his bill a month ago. Most importantly, he helped guide into law a program that will initially provide roughly 1,500 low-income 4-year-olds with access to high-quality preschool programs.

As he signed the bill into law Thursday, he also opened the door to what I hope down the road will become a much more ambitious preschool landscape.
