Republicans Expand General Assembly Majorities, Sweep Statewide Offices

Republicans swept Indiana’s statewide election races while padding their supermajorities in the Indiana House and Senate.

Senate Republicans gained three seats to push their margin in the chamber to 40-10. Jasper Representative Mark Messmer easily won the open seat of retiring Senator Lindel Hume (D-Princeton), while former Dan Coats aide Erin Houchin ousted former Senate Minority Leader Richard Young (D-Milltown). And Republican Jon Ford defeated Terre Haute Senator Tim Skinner, 52%-48%.
