Legislators dig in to begin long session
Jan 8, 2015 Washington Times Herald

Members of the Indiana General Assembly began the long budget writing session looking at hundreds of bills that could translate into new laws.

"We had 100 bills introduced on the first day, and I would not be surprised if we have 400 to 600 bills introduced in the Senate alone this session," said District 38 State Senator Eric Bassler. "I don't think they will all get through the session or even through committee but we have a lot of work in front of us."

Most lawmakers are calling this the "education session" of the legislature. Governor Mike Pence has already unveiled an education program that calls for more funding for schools, more money for the school voucher program and an expansion of vocational education. State Democrats have added an agenda that includes free text books for students and a state wide preschool education program.
