NEWBURGH, Ind. — Understanding the importance of the country’s waterways was a goal of a recent tour along the Ohio River.

Nearly 200 people gathered in Newburgh for the annual Ohio River Lock Tour organized by the Indiana Corn Growers Association and the Indiana Soybean Alliance. This year’s event took place on a deck barge that traveled through the Newburgh Lock and Dam.

The Ohio River tour originally was started to show political and agriculture leaders the importance of maintaining the U.S. waterway infrastructure. The event continues to highlight that fact along with the importance of river transportation to the state’s economy as more than 51 million tons of grain are shipped on the Ohio River annually.

Participants enjoyed the ride along the Ohio River while exploring the lock and dam system.

Bob and Teresa Sears, a retired couple who has been on the trip before, think the tour is both fun and educational.
